At Real Talk: Unsaid Words, the room was filled with something rare—honesty. Not the kind that hides behind politeness or small talk, but the kind that changes people, conversations, and communities.
Around the table, youth and parents sat face to face, sharing truths that had never been spoken out loud. Some came ready to talk; others just came to listen. But by the end, everyone walked away changed.
The conversation, facilitated by Coleman Reynolds, the Real Talk Chair, and Damita Jefferson, a VOICES parent, centered on how unhealed experiences and generational trauma often shape how parents connect with their children—and how communication can open the door to healing.
“When parents are hurting, that pain can echo into how they love and lead,” shared Ronnie Beathea, Director of Youth Services. “Real Talk is a space where youth and parents can be real with themselves and with each other.”
Finding Connection Through Courage
The theme Unsaid Words wasn’t just a title—it was the heartbeat of the day. Youth opened up about what it feels like when parents hide their struggles, and parents admitted how hard it can be to balance their own pain while raising strong, emotionally aware children.
Cordae, Real Talk Team member, captured it simply: “It’s everyone’s first time living.” Her reflection reminded the group that both parents and kids are still figuring life out, often without realizing they’re on the same side.
From there, a rhythm of vulnerability took hold.
“Give parents some grace,” said Eli, urging his peers to recognize that healing takes time.
“Parents are struggling as well,” added Juell, whose words met with quiet nods around the room.
And Cameron distilled the message to its essence: “Sometimes, to have better conversations with parents, you just have to talk.”
Each voice built on the last, weaving a conversation that was less about blame and more about understanding.
Breaking Cycles, Building Bridges
For the parents, the experience was equally profound. Nine mothers and fathers chose to show up—to listen, reflect, and share how their own upbringing affects how they parent today.
“It’s not that we don’t care,” one parent admitted. “Sometimes we just don’t have the words.”
Those words landed deeply. They reminded everyone that silence doesn’t mean indifference—it often means pain that hasn’t been given space to heal.
As the conversations unfolded, laughter began to replace tension. Youth who started the day quietly became curious. Parents who arrived guarded began to open up. What emerged was a sense of collective empathy—an understanding that healing isn’t one-sided; it’s shared.
“The magic of Real Talk,” Beathea reflected, “is that it reminds us healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in conversation.”
Turning Experience Into Empowerment
The Real Talk experience gave participants more than just a dialogue; it gave them tools for leadership, self-expression, and emotional awareness.
Coleman, one of the participating youth, shared, “I learned how to host a show, and it was a great experience! Getting media training helped me find my own voice.”
Others echoed similar lessons: how to listen better, how to express themselves without fear, and how to see communication as an act of courage.
Even for youth like Elijah, who felt he’d heard some of these lessons before, the experience reinforced why they matter. “Practicing how to express myself and hearing others’ perspectives still matters,” he shared.
In the words of Diezel, “Communication heals.” It was a simple truth that became the takeaway of the entire day.
Giving Youth the Mic
Real Talk isn’t just a discussion—it’s a movement powered by young voices. Held quarterly, each episode gives youth the opportunity to take the lead: designing topics, guiding conversations, and challenging both peers and adults to think differently about the world around them. From unpacking identity and mental health to exploring family communication and community change, Real Talk gives young people the mic—and the platform—to share what too often goes unheard.
“We’re not just investing in programs,” explained Beathea, “We’re investing in opportunities for connection, for understanding, and for healing across generations.”
Through these youth-led conversations, VOICES transforms dialogue into development, creating spaces where stories become lessons, empathy becomes leadership, and experience becomes change. Each Real Talk episode builds on the last, strengthening trust between youth, families, and the broader community.
By turning listening into action, Real Talk proves that young people aren’t just the future; they’re the leaders shaping today.
The Real Talk series continues to bridge generations, amplify lived experiences, and empower youth to lead with authenticity and courage. Tune in on Monday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m. on WISH-TV to hear Real Talk: Unsaid Words.
