Building Bridges Through Service: Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Partners with VOICES

When Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance began exploring volunteer opportunities for one of its large corporate teams in early 2024, the company turned to United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) for guidance in finding a community partner that had the capacity and need for a larger team. UWCI introduced them to VOICES—a youth development organization whose mission is to empower young people through mentorship, education, and community engagement immediately resonated with them.

“We were looking for an organization that could accommodate a large group of volunteers and provide meaningful work that truly made an impact,” said Carrie Patterson, Community Relations Manager, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. “VOICES had recently moved into a former Indianapolis Public School building, so there were countless opportunities to roll up our sleeves and help breathe new life into the space.”

That first volunteer day marked the beginning of a powerful partnership rooted in shared values of service, collaboration, and care.

From Paintbrushes to Purpose

On April 11, 2024, more than 60 Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance employees spent the day painting and beautifying hallways and classrooms at the new VOICES facility—transforming what was once an empty school into a vibrant, welcoming environment. The team’s energy and enthusiasm set the tone for an ongoing relationship that would grow far beyond a single day of service, illustrating what true corporate citizenship looks like: connection, empathy, and humanity.

Over the next 20 months, 206 Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance volunteers contributed nearly 640 volunteer hours, returning multiple times to enhance the facility and support VOICES’ programs in new ways.

They donated and organized items for Marsha’s Closet and the on-site food pantry, ensuring that young people and families in need could access essential items with dignity and respect. Their work extended outside, where they constructed community garden beds and landscaped “The Spot”—a green space designed for youth recreation and reflection—during United Way’s Go All IN Day. This work was completed under 100-degree summer heat, showcasing their commitment and resilience.

Creating Spaces for Growth

In addition to physical improvements, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance teams undertook hands-on remodeling projects that enhanced the functionality and ambiance of the VOICES campus. They decluttered and organized common areas, assembled furniture and shelving, and set up gaming corners and educational spaces that inspire creativity and connection.

“Every improvement made by the Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance team directly impacts how our young people experience this space,” said Jill Wynne, Director of Development at VOICES. “They walk into classrooms that are bright, welcoming, and reflective of a community that cares about them. That sense of belonging makes all the difference.”

Giving Season, Giving Spirit

The partnership continued into the holiday season, as IFB volunteers from the company supported VOICES’ annual Holiday Toy Drive, helping families shop for gifts and essentials. Their involvement ensured dozens of children experienced a joyful and dignified celebration surrounded by community support.

Turning Art Into Empathy

In summer 2024, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance hosted a Garage Sale for Good, donating proceeds to VOICES programs and inviting youth from VOICES’ Day Reporting Program to share their artwork. Four young men curated a pop-up gallery and spoke candidly about their pieces, each of which represented deeply personal stories.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance’s CEO, Kevin Murphy, was particularly moved by one young man’s piece—a tribute to his mother, the only person who had never given up on him. Murphy purchased the artwork on the spot and gifted it back to the young man so he could give it to his mother.

“Having leadership at every level—from executives to interns—show up with humility and heart sends an incredibly powerful message to our youth,” said Wynne. “It shows them that success isn’t about status; it’s about service.”

Recognition and Ripple Effect

For their sustained commitment, VOICES honored Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance with the 2025 “Light in the Community” Award, recognizing their leadership in volunteerism, financial support, and advocacy. Later in the year, VOICES dedicated its youth services hallway to Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.

“Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance exemplifies what corporate partnership should be,” said Kia Wright, Executive Director of VOICES. “They’re not just writing checks—they’re showing up, getting involved, and building bridges between corporate teams and the community.”

As of November 2025, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance’s partnership has touched nearly every corner of VOICES’ facility—and countless lives within it. Their efforts have helped create a home where more than 200 young people can learn, grow, and heal each year in an environment that reflects beauty, hope, and possibility.
